The City of Mercer Island Seeks Your Input to Plan For Replacement of Critical City Facilities - Link to Survey Below

Following the outcome of Proposition 1 in the November 2025 general election—when the bond measure to fund a new Public Safety and Maintenance Facility received strong but insufficient support—the Mercer Island City Council and City staff are continuing to grapple with very real and pressing facilities challenges facing our community.

The City’s current public works facility is structurally unsound, not up to modern building and safety codes, and is undersized for current needs. These are not cosmetic issues; they affect employee safety, operational efficiency, and the City’s ability to reliably deliver core services that residents depend on every day.

At the same time, the Mercer Island Police Department is operating out of temporary trailers. These facilities are not adequate for a modern police department and, critically, do not allow the department to achieve or maintain professional accreditation. This situation puts Mercer Island at a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting and retaining qualified police officers, at a time when competition for experienced officers is intense across the region. Did you know the city had to implement a $40,000 hiring bonus for experienced officers in order to remain competitive?

In November, 55% of voters supported Proposition 1—clear evidence that a majority of the community recognizes these challenges and the need for a solution. However, bond measures require 60% approval to pass under state law. That shortfall means we must go back to the drawing board, listen carefully, and work collaboratively to develop a more cost-effective, broadly supported approach that reflects community priorities.

City staff and the City Council are committed to doing exactly that. We are working hard to explore alternatives, refine cost assumptions, and better understand what residents value most as we plan next steps. A critical part of that effort is hearing directly from you.

To help inform this discussion, the City has commissioned an independent online survey to gather feedback on City services and facilities planning. Your input will directly shape how elected officials evaluate options and make decisions in the months ahead.

This is an important opportunity to make your voice heard and help guide Mercer Island toward a solution that is practical, responsible, and aligned with community expectations. Thank you for taking the time to participate.
