Sustainability is taking center stage on the Rock this spring. The Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce has announced its inaugural Sustainable Fashion Show, an event designed to prove that high-end style and environmental stewardship are the season’s perfect pair.

Set for Thursday, April 23rd, at the Mercer Island Community & Event Center, the show will transform the runway into a showcase for the Island’s own beloved Thrift Shop alongside premier consignment houses from the Seattle and Bellevue area.

A Vision for Sustainable Style

The concept is the brainchild of Chamber CEO Jen Dean, who previously spearheaded similar successful events in Kirkland.

"I had always wanted to do a fashion show when I started here," Dean noted in a recent interview. "The Chamber had been needing to add one more community event to round out our programming. This year, things just lined up perfectly to bring the idea forth."

While sustainable fashion shows are gaining traction regionally, the Mercer Island iteration takes a specifically "high-end" approach to show that luxury and "pre-loved" clothing can be synonymous.

On the Runway

The show will feature 16 models sporting curated looks from five distinct consignment and non-profit partners:

  • Mercer Island Thrift Shop

  • Odette & Co.

  • Eres Boutique

  • Reprise

  • Refugee Artisan Initiative (RAI)

Emceed by local business owners Moni Giles (Evolve with Moni) and Maria Gallardo (Mbellish Studio by Maria), the runway will focus on three core themes: breezy Daytime Looks, elegant Evening Wear, and sophisticated Resort Wear. Each outfit is curated to demonstrate the versatility of second-hand high fashion.

More Than a Runway

The event is designed as a full sensory experience rather than a traditional sit-down show. Attendees can enjoy festive mocktails and light bites while exploring a curated marketplace before and after the main event.

The vendor booths will feature local retailers with deep roots in the sustainability movement including the clothing rental service Armoire and eco-friendly accessory brands. Even the backstage glam has a high-fashion pedigree: Prada Beauty is partnering with the show to provide makeup for all 16 models.

A Community Connection

While the "thrifting" trend has exploded among younger generations, this mid-day event is designed to bridge the gap between local business owners, employees, and the community at large. Partners for the event include The Style Collective and Mercer Island Parks & Rec, ensuring the show is a true community-wide collaboration.

"It is not a new concept," says Dean, "but every show takes on its own interpretation. For Mercer Island, that means showcasing sustainability at every level."
