About Mercer Island Presbyterian Church Concert Series
The Mercer Island Presbyterian Church Concert Series (MIPC Concert Series) is attended by many Island residents. The Concert Series offers monthly concerts from September through May. The stated goal for the series is: “to support musical arts at MIPC and Mercer Island and to broaden the reach of MIPC in the community by supporting musical arts.”
The Concert Series was started over 20 years ago by then-MIPC music director, Cheryl Storey. There was considerable skepticism that people would attend regular concerts at the church, given all the beautiful concert venues in the Seattle area. Due to the quality of the performances, however, attendance at the concerts quickly grew. Today, we often have 200 people attending our concerts. The Concert Series is funded entirely by donations from concert attendees
Long-time Mercer Island resident Sue Sherwood heads up a small committee that recruits and reviews possible musical presentations, watches over budgets, and works to publicize upcoming performances. Another major role for the committee is bringing cookies and other snacks for the post-performance gatherings in the church’s indoor courtyard. The gatherings are always well attended and give attendees an opportunity to meet and talk with the performers.
The Concert Series presents a wide variety of music, hosting handbell choirs, organists, musical films, instrumental ensembles, jazz groups, big bands, orchestras, choral groups, chamber orchestras, and solo artists. Here are a few posters from our past concerts.
